TIRED OF TROLLING TO FIND COOL NEW TRIBES?

I had thought about starting a tribe called new tribes tribe
you know it is so hard to boost your tribes w\ithout being a troll or nuisance

so I thought about perhaps starting a tribe called new tribes

<<<Not only limited to New tribes...but all tribes that are looking for fresh voices, enlightenment, and more participation>>>>

In this tribe you can post info. about your tribes...perhaps provide links to your most interesting threads in your past topical archives

also ask others to make deals to invite 3 or more of thier friends to your tribe.......
(certain friends that they feel would be intested in that tribe)
And you would agree also to do the same for their tribe

So in that thread titled after the name of your tribe...others will sign on to deals with you to boost each others tribe\tribes with 3 or more invites of close friends

Of course to do this you both must join each others tribes to activate the invite friends to tribe option
ALSO PROVIDE IN THAT THREAD LINKS TO YOUR TRIBE

responders will intern join your tribe and post links to their tribe...and contact you both in your thread and personally to ensure a quick response and to make sure both parties are interested in endorsing each others tribe idea

In threads it is also encouraged that you let others know what you think about these new tribes....but, be nice...even if you don't agree....It's called constructive critisism
I hate deleating threads...In fact, I have never had to deleate a single thread or remove a single person from any of my 13 tribes.....

When my icon displays in tribe postings, my handle ("Charmaine") is truncated to display only 4 characters ("Char...").

Such truncation is not consistent among icons, I've noticed. One person's icon may display a 7 character handle, while another person may only display 5 characters.
What's the deal with this truncation issue? And is there anything I can do to expand the handle character length currently displayed when I post to tribe?

As you may already know, we will be making a few changes to the site within the next few days. At the same time, we will by tidying up the official communication channels between our members and our employees. Over the years there has been a proliferation of tribes about Tribe, the result being that it is confusing for members to know where to go to find information, and it is next to impossible for employees to keep up with all of the different Tribe tribes. This is one of those tribes. As of September 21, 2006, this tribe will be made private and employees will no longer be monitoring it for new posts.

In its place we will have four new publicly accessible tribes that will serve as our official communication channels with users. These tribes will be monitored and actively moderated by employees of Tribe.net. These tribes will not be live until after our system upgrade. They are:

http://brainstorm.tribe.net - Tribe.net Brainstorm - much like tribeideas today, but with a fresh start.
http://bugs.tribe.net - Tribe.net Bug Reports - for reporting bugs that you find. As the bugs are fixed the threads may be culled (time and resource permitting on our side). Bugs that are actually more points of confusion will be entered into the FAQ if there is a workaround of better explanation.
http://faq.tribe.net - Tribe.net FAQ - this is not a place to ask questions, but rather a place where the posts will be "Jeopardy!" style, with the subject being a Question and the message being the answer. Members may post their own FAQ's or add more detail or workarounds to other people's FAQ's.
http://blog.tribe.net - Tribe.net Company Blog - This will be a moderated tribe that is mostly just to allow the employees to post announcements about the product, the industry, or anything pertinent to the business side of the house. For the time being we will not be allowing people to join, but are making it moderated so that its content may be syndicated.

You are free to join all of these new tribes after the upgrade is complete (except the Blog, of course). At this point, we are scheduling the upgrade for the morning of September 21. Each of the new tribes contains a description of what sort of postings are appropriate for that forum. We would like to thank all who have participated here. We do actually read and value the feedback, both good and bad. We try to do our best to keep up with it, even with the few employees we have, and we would encourage your continued constructive participation in the new Tribe tribes.

It puts me off everytime. MySpace is more inviting, in terms of icon-pic size and font size alone.

I am part of a lot of tribes that i want to occasional post in but am not able to be constantly active in. I would love to find a way to be notified when someone responds to anything I post.

I think this would work best if it was added to the "my alerts" section
( you know the one that tells me someone has commented on a blog post or sent me a message.)

Maybe something like:

* 4 post responses

then when you click on it to takes you to the post or to a page that lists all the different posts people have responded to. giving you the option to ignore posts that you no longer want to be notified about.

Its awesome that the new user profile lets you selectively list the tribes you want to pay more attention to. That new feature coupled with this one would definitely help boost my tribe.net efficiency as well as my entire tribe participation.

If other use tribe like I do I think, dare I say, it might even boost overall tribe usage!
can someone point me to the privacy settings?
if there are no privacy settings for our blog, then frankly this really sucks. now that tribe is even bigger, it means more people have access to our info, anyone can google our name or content in our profile... and voila!... any freaky stranger, stalker, or employer can read anything in our blog w/o being a member or on our friends network. I can't fathom why we don't have the ability to block this if desired.

Like my event listing. Now I have no idea where to check on that, unless I navigate around tribes that I know I've included in it.

The big one is how tribes default to 'All Posts', which means that listings and events are now intermingled with actual tribe posts.

I LIKED seeing all of my tribes listed down the right-hand side of the page. I LIKED being able to see how many people have viewed my listing from my homepage - without having to click on it and change the number.

Jesus.. on my homepage, I've got blog postings, listings, events, and even recommendations all lumped together.

This is really unbearable. Don't expect me to continue replying to this thread, because now I really hate being on tribe. Damn, I guess I do have better things to do than be here. I guess I can check back every once in a while, but I can't bear to be here as often as I was accustomed. You can be suer that others feel the way I do, and your advertisers will get much less exposure.

Tribe Creator,

Thank You for creating such a powerful revolutionary tool!

i need to say a few things...

Regarding the new Tribe look and structure and enforcements:

I feel like i just walked into a sterile white-walled hospital. The aesthetic here is hard on my eyes.

C'mon Tribe creator, Do you remember when you announced to yourself just a few years ago that you would not 'sell out'?
Are you really gonna do it now? hmmmm...

Tribe creator, I am so very thankful for what you have created here for us loverz on the cusp of an ever-expanding human bubble!

You did it! You succeeded...Yay!

But these recent changes leave me feeling crinkled.
I'll get beyond it and I'll move on if I need...but I want to continue here with you

Where did my community board go?
The community board was what i adored most about Tribe.com

The most glaringly painful blow to my reality was the removal of the community message board...which used to be the first thing I'd see after logging into Tribe. You helped us connect on this left coast of north America...and...around this planet.
Do you know how excited I felt when I saw what was going on in my community?
You invented a marvelously powerful tool!

You created a revolutionary tool!

Now I see: "My Tribes" and "My Friends" and "Posts from my friends"
Thank You! But I want to see what is going on beyond my immediate friends.
That's how we expand beyond our immediate connections...by peeking into the periphery, you know

I felt so engaged in my community. I once interacted with people who were not yet my familiar friends...those who offered something to my community...and I interacted with people who were acquaintances...or soon to be friends.
I did like seeing what was going on in my community.
Thank You! But where did the community message board go?

And what about all this new censoring of the human body??
I know you know that censoring of the human body is a crooked (ie un-aligned) assertion by those who want to assert moral authority...rooted in the invention of a religion. You know this.

What is this about?
Was this new enforcement made to thicken your bottom line...for profits??

Look how good you have it now!
I empower you to look around you. Look at the beauty you have created.
Look at all the people who admire you for what you have created!

Do you want to invert such a beautiful creation?
Will such an inversion haunt and harden you??

What happened, Tribe creator?
Really... what happened?
Did you forget something?

I won't give up on you just yet...because it is so glaringly obvious what integrity you embody beyond this temporary layer of (you know what)

...

Tribe creator, are you gearing up to sell you site to another buyer / corporation?
Since you now seem to have you advertisements in full sail operation, perhaps you are 'cleaning' this site up a bit so that you can sell to the highest bidder...or perhaps you already have a bidder in mind.
Most of us do no object to advertising because you deserve financial reward.

I heard Rupert Murdoch recently purchased, for about $580 million, the firm that runs the Myspace.com online community.

Will Tribe.com and Myspace.com merge?

Or...Does Tribe.com simply want to gather more advertisers by offering a more palatable and main-stream platform?

hmmmm?

(give a kid a yummy lolly-pop...then after a few licks...take it back and hand him a cube of sugar)

ahhhhh shux!

...

You invented a revolutionary tool. Thank You!

I won't give up on you just yet

I will hold space for you to stand in your integrity

One of the restaurants I recommended has changed ownership and all the info I posted is not accurate. There are things I'd like to add to the other recommendation about the owners which I didn't know when I posted it originally. I'm having trouble figuring out where to click to do that. Thanks for a reply.

This is a beginning of my memoir. I'm trying to figure out how to post it on my blog . . .please ignore unless you're in the mood for my memoir, lol.

My breakfast this morning is Lamictal, Wellbutrin, and Lexapro, chased by a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios with 2% milk and a large banana.
The woodstove has warmed the cabin up from 60 degrees when I woke up [to the sound of rain] to 75, which sounds warmer than it actually feels in here.
Asha is stretched out on the unfinished floor near the stove, poised to slurp up what tiny bit of milk I leave in my cereal bowl. I think she's learned to hear me finishing: the way the spoon clinks more sharply off of the empty ceramic bowl.
I'm writing the kind of letter that I wish someone could/would write me.

This is a letter from an avatar idiot. From a man gorgeous and grotesque, requiring no ornamental scarring in addition to that which the roots of his gene tree bequeathed him.
Touch me here, on my chest, and you can feel, if you close your eyes and touch with your heart, a smooth brail, whorled whispers of ancient pain: not psychic or emotional pain, that would come later, but the dried rain and wind-smoothed lava field scars of former blood and infection, ready at the slightest jar, to seep through my T-shirt and plaid flannel, which camouflages the blood stains better. You notice that I don't say "acne"? "Acne" is "zits": an irritant. What I'm dealing with is called "Cystic Acne Vulgaris", one of the most severe types of acne; and it's depth in the dermis causes scars which no plastic surgeon can erase. No amount of sacrifice to Pele, or Jesus, or Krishna, or Buddha, could stem that flow. Now, if I could majically go back and spare myself those seven awful years, I would not.

Touch me here: my right hand: which awakened me last night on tingling fire. Maybe it's carpal tunnel; maybe something worse, but whatever it is fans into pain when I repeatedly lift heavy things, like stones, plywood, pressure-treated boards, or wheelbarrows full of wet earth. Typing this does not make it hurt worse, but even if it did, I'd type.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I knew by Saturday morning that we'd have to get out, and soon. The noon news confirmed it, and I asked mom: ". . .well, anything here you can't live without?"
and locked the second-floor condo door. We got into our stuffed cars, and headed north across Lake Ponchartrain. I could feel New Orleans swelling with fear, like a cyst itching to explode, and that I was near the vanguard of escape. Asha and I breezed across the Causeway, twenty miles of heavy but easy traffic over the choppy brown lake. We turned left at Mandeville, and hooked up with I-55 at Hammond. From there it was seven hours north to Oxford, Mississippi ("Mississippi": Father of Waters), my sister's and her families house, where we'd stay, glued in horror to CNN for the next seven days at the cluster fuck of Katrina's aftermath.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I had arrived back South in July 2001 as a hitchhiker: from Denver, with Asha. Rachel had dropped us off at the Tomahawk Truck Stop on I-70 just east of Denver. It was July 2nd. Being an astrologer, I'd checked my astro-weather carefully, and predicted I'd make it to New Orleans within a week if all went well.
The first 48 hrs. were instructive. I counted thousands of cars and trucks and vans and semi's as they roared by us on their way to, I imagined, some 4th of July family reunion. How could I be such a dolt and try to hitchhike across the country (with a DOG) when almost every vehicle on the road is a sardined mini-van or a redneck family smushed into a semi cab?
I prayed to the gods of good hitching karma. I cleansed my aura with natural American Spirit cigarette smoke. I wrote "TOPEKA" in big letters on the bottom of Asha's orange frisbee/water bowl. I almost made a deal with the devil.
In Colorado, in July, you can bet the farm that, come about 3pm you're gonna get a thunderstorm. I saw the thunderheads forming and walked for cover towards a cathedral (of all bizarre things) under construction. Near it was a wind break row of scrub cedar, and I spread out my blue tarp and pitched camp. About the time my tent was half up, the sky started spitting huge, cold raindrops.
Only partially soaked, I piled into my dome tent with Asha and listened to the storm cut loose outside. I'd forgotten tent stakes, and hoped a big gust of wind wouldn't send us rolling across the plains like some mutant tumbleweed.
Pretty soon, the tent sprang leaks: ceiling and floor. Damn. I forgot to do the seam-seal thing. So I piled everything on top of my backpack and said a prayer of thanks that my sleeping bag was synthetic fill instead of down. I used my Swiss Army knife to open Asha's dinner, while my repast was peanut butter Nabs and sardines.
After the storm, a couple of the cathedral construction guys came by and gave me a longneck beer. Angels unaware. I had to keep Asha on her leash, because she heard them coming from half a mile away and started barking, back hair straight up in a doggy Mohawk. Of all the disadvantages of hitchhiking with your dog, the one big advantage is nobody will ever, ever sneak up on you.

***
We got up and I packed,
all soggy and stiff, at dawn the next day. Asha'd barked at every rabbit and lightening flash during the night, so I couldn't claim a restful night's sleep. The promise of getting our first ride propelled me, and by 6:30 a.m. we were roadside.

Observations:
•	Some people will slow down almost to a stop to check you out; then see that you have a dog and hit the accelerator.
•	Most people avoid eye contact, even truckers.
•	A big golf umbrella to shade your dog is a must in July.
•	Likewise, a water bladder (CamelBak, Platypus etc.)
•	You're in luck if you're a songwriter and find yourself hitchhiking: making up goofy songs is a good way to pass time.
•	You're ahead of the curve if you carry a micro-cassette recorder with you to catch your inspirations.
•	A disposable 35mm camera costs a well spent $6.
•	Though cheap and portable and a good source of protein, sardines are gross.
•	Dinty Moore Beef Stew is a way better, even cold.

***
Fifteen minutes from sunset and quittin' time on the 4th of July, I was seriously considering bagging this whole idea. I'd been looked at several thousand times like I must be Charles Manson's retarded little brother to be out in the summer heat like this with my big black dog.
I knew they were only the imaginings of my heat-addled brain, these voices, but standing by the side of the road for so long. . .well, you won't be disappointed if you expect to start hearing voices at some point.
Backpack shouldered, I was walking towards the overpass, then the truck stop, to phone Rachel with the unsurprising news that I'd failed to get a ride in two and a half days. So, stewing in this gumbo of frustration, relief and shame/failure, of all unlikely things: a white Ford Explorer pulled onto the shoulder.
I trotted with Asha towards it, praying that this was a dog lover who'd seen her and had sympathy on the pooch, if not her moron owner.
"Climb in, there's a blanket in back for your dog. . ."

***
Ty was a systems engineer with a subsidiary of IBM / Denver. He wore a stringy greying beard and long hair, and he took my Colorado Drivers License when I eventually offered it to him "just so you have some indication I am who I'm saying I am. . ." his eyes twinkling at the innocence of my gesture.

Asha was out cold in the back.

***
"I had a feeling you'd be there. . ." he said after a long silence.
"Say more about that", I replied, passing back the joint.
"I'd been hearing this. . .instruction . . .all day; telling me to leave earlier than I'd planned ( I was going to head out late tomorrow); that it was important I leave this afternoon. . ."
"I understand."
"So. . .what is it you need to learn?"

****
For the next fourteen hours, we slid across Colorado, Kansas, and half of Missouri, unencumbered by traditional notions of Time and Space. We spoke in that contradictory oblique way that is devastatingly specific and anonymous all at the same time, which is familiar to hitchhikers who know how to ask good questions, then shut up and listen. In the sky to the north and south, fireworks popped like blue, yellow, green and red signal flares over an endless ocean.
At one point a gigantic set of sparks flew up from the westbound lanes: a spectacular shower, like five hundred roman candles had just gone off at the same time and in the same direction. A boat trailer had blown a tire clean off the rim.
I instinctively imagined casting a bright purple-y silver net over them, trying to calm the driver out of slamming on his brakes and causing the trailer to flip. I do this every now and then: imagine that I'm having some effect on people who don't even know I exist.
The truck and boat made it safely to the side of the interstate.
"How did you do that?" Ty asked a couple of minutes later.
"Do what?"
"Calm the guy in that truck? Freaking out; you saw it; and you did something. How did you do that?"
"Before I answer that, Ty; would you mind telling me how you saw what I just did?"

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Since my junior year at Ole Miss (Univ. of Mississippi) I had been wrestling, like Jacob on that sandbar, with my demons. Or it felt like wrestling with my demons. Half-way through that fall semester something closed down in me. I stopped going to classes.
I would walk up the hill to the cafeteria, but I always ate alone. I did not want company. I put on a hairy "leave me the fuck alone" coat, walking with my eyes down, six feet ahead on the sidewalk. I closed the blinds of my first-floor dorm room, and ignored the knocks of friends: "Richard, you in there? . . . "
One class was a psychology research project I'd come up with: "The Anhedonic Effects of Neuroleptics on Valium-induced Rats." I was given eight white lab rats, and had surgically inserted shunts into their carotid veins, through which Valium was pumped by a reenforcent-feedback device. At the beginning of the semester I had named them Alberto, Bernardo, Carlos, Denis, Eduardo, Franco, Gordo, and Javier. Even though I'd always cared deeply for small animals, I rationalized to myself that this was in the good name of Science, so at first I visited them and talked to them and carefully observed how much water they drank, and how vigorously. I emptied their cages of crap. But slowly, as it became harder to leave my dorm room, I forgot them for periods. I can't really say for how long; Time was very skewed, but once when I went to give them water, four of them were dead. The other four attacked the water bottle like it was air and they were drowning.
Writing this, I feel sadness and shame. I had in effect tortured these animals. I can't tell if the irony of this is clear to you: how unlike me it is to have done this, having been the savior of countless tadpoles from drying ditches, refugee baby birds, and injured squirrels. I was a little St. Frances, for fuck's sake.
But that was the first time, the first of many subsequent times that the power lines of my brain would overheat and fall; electrocuted serpents writhing and hissing sparks onto the wet pavement of my mind. I had no choice, you see, but to curl into my horrid dark cell of mind, and to remind myself to breathe. ". . .just breeeeeeeeathe. . ."

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The last time I performed was two years ago at Burning Man. Jesse, Olivier, Shannon, Ted (Denver Improv guy: almost made
me pee on myself laughing) and I were walking over near Three O'Clock on the round city dial when we saw a talent show: a stage, and a large crowd. I
was wearing my favorite outfit: pink sequined mini-skirt ,
dusty brown cowboy boots, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed garden hat; carrying my
Nepalese shoulder bag full of essentials: smokes, laptop, and sex toys. The idea hit me full on: I'd never considered this before, but I told them to come on, I have a show to do.

I wormed my way through the crowd to the head of a long
line of would-be performers, and found the guy making the
list as the Emcee announced that they were down to their last
two performances.

I said: " I have an act."

"What'dya got?"

"Masturbating Hamlet".

He escorted me to stage right and said: "You're up next".

My heart picked up: kaThumpaThumpaThumpa, preparing me. He
handed me the mic. I looked down at my playa dusted boots and drew a
deep breath, then glided up four plywood steps onto the
stage. I paused for just long enough to take in the crowd, letting the silence get their attention.

"A long time ago, in the ancient kingdom of Denmark, a
Prince has lost his father the King, secretly murdered by his wicked brother.
Exhorted by his father's ghost to exact revenge, yet aware of the state's precarious military and political position with hostile Norway, Prince Hamlet considers his options in perhaps the most famous and solipsistic monolog of impotence ever penned:

"To be, or not to be; that is the question: [reach into my
bag and draw out a small bottle of KY Liquid, showing it to
the tittering crowd. Grandly lifting it high and squeezing
a slick stream into my left hand; casually lifting
my pink skirt and lubing my cock [laughter]
"Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and
arrows of outrageous fortune,
or to take arms[stroke] against a sea of troubles and by
opposing end them. To die,
to sleep, no more. And by a sleep to say we end the heart-ache and
the thousand natural [stroke] shocks [stroke] that flesh is
heir to: 'tis a consummation [stroke/laughter] devoutly to be
wished!
To die. To sleep. . .to sleep, perchance to dream: ay,
there's the rrrrrub [strrrrrooooke/laughter]: for in
that sleep of death, what dreams may come when we have
shuffled off this mortal [stroke] coil must give us pause.
There's the respect that makes calamity of so long life;
for who would bear the whips [stroke] and scorns [stroke]
of Time, the oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
the pangs [stroke] of disprized love, the law's delay, the
insolence of office, and the sperms [laughter] that patient merit of
the unworthy takes, while he himself might his quietus make
with a [stroke] bare bodkin!? [laughter] Who would
fardels [slapping my dick over and over against my thigh]
(a "fardel" is a bundle of sticks: a load. Nobody gets this
joke) bear to grunt [stroke] and sweat [stroke/
laughter] under a weary life but that the dread of
something after death: the undiscovered [stroke] cuntry
[stroke] from whose bourne no traveller returns, puzzles
the Will [stroke] and makes us rather bear those ills we
have than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus, conscience doth make cowards of us all, and thus the
native hue of Resolution [stroke] is sicklied o'er with
the pale cast of thought, and enterprises of great pith
[stroke]and moment [stroke: reaching into bag and producing
a huge shiny black butt plug/squeamish laughter/giggles of 'o my god. . .] with this regard their currents turn awry and lose the name of action [decide
against insertion; bow like a French courtier.
[howls and clapping washing over my faux coy smile]."

Need I add that I was not taking my medication that week?
And that I was high?
And that I never got an erection?
And that I wanted it that way?

First time in my life I've given Mr. InstantTentPole that much
slippery attention without so much as a peep.

Ted treated me sort of like a celebrity after that. He was
flummoxed; just hammered by the audacity of my
Shakespearean desert improv. I felt uncomfortable, sort of
embarrassed by his deference. I wanted to say "Stop that! You make me laugh harder than anybody laughed back there. . . "

Of course this was before I was on my present cocktail. Still, I miss doing shit like that: nothing held back, relishing the spotlight, moving the audience to my will, seducing them, wow-ing them. I have no clue why someone as introverted as I am would enjoy this, but I always have. Yea . . . part of it certainly is the rush of Control. "Watch Me Now".
"You have no choice: you MUST watch this. . .go ahead: TRY not to watch me, I fuckin' dare you . . ." , lmao: Rasputin Jr.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

My Accord's clutch went out in San Antonio, on my way back from Colorado for a Leadership training weekend in December 2002. By the time Asha and I hitchhiked back to New Orleans I was on fire, my eyes were intense and powerful, and I knew that if I were to remain a free civilian I'd best wear my sunglasses, which I did day and night.
I was renting a single room above a coffee shop on Esplanade Ave. and all the stuff I wanted was there: 1952 banjo (inherited from Uncle Brodie), the framed red stone rubbing of Krishna, riding his chariot into battle (the single item I wanted from my parents), my guitar, a painting by Capucine, a former lover. This painting is done almost entirely in hieroglyphic symbols, symbols I've never seen anywhere else. The one conventional image is in the center, of a hooded woman giving alms to children.
Another friend in Colorado had given me a pair of lizard-skin cowboy boots that were too small for him, and I wore these with jeans, a black turtle-neck, and a black autumn-patterned silk floral scarf. Days later, sock-footed and shivering, I was admitted to the Charity Hospital psychiatric unit. My doctor told me later that I had been speaking as several different characters: a Civil War officer and a Sioux warrior/chief (they were apparently trying to end the U.S./Indian War); Robert (pronounced in French: "roBEAR"), a sadistic slave trader in the 1700's New Orleans; a pacifist Japanese martial artist; a black blues singer named "Bat Blind"; Agent Smith from "The Matrix"; LeStat ("Interview with the Vampire"); and Britney Spears.

All I remember is that these "characters" were much more in control of me than I of them. Since I'm trained as an actor, all of them but Britney I can pull off really well, especially from this uber-Method place I'm in . . .
My police officer friend Penny had heard over the scanner that some man is walking around Fauburg St. John scaring people all night with a scarf over his face. Lucky for me she knew that I'd recently run out of meds, so she got to me first, otherwise I'd have almost certainly wound up in central lockup.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I'm finally in a movie, and the coolest part of it is that all of the cameras are hidden: my director wants me to be totally un-self-conscious. Also very cool is that we're communicating wirelessly: him whispering suggestions in my ear: ". . .very nice, very nice . . .now, take out a cigarette . . . just let it dangle from your lips for a little bit before you light it: guys don't care but the women love it [watching you smoke]. Very nice . . .now, stand up and pull your coat collar [long wool overcoat] up against your neck . . .button it so that it looks military . . .that's it . . .now look across the street and through the branches of that wysteria, you see the one? . . .good . . .very nice . . .

I can't see it, but know there's a camera there.

I feel like a cross between James Dean, Edward James Olmos, and Brad Pitt, sunglasses on, hands crammed deep in my pockets, hair [shoulder length] swept back, three-day stubble, cigarette dangling from the side of my mouth: irresistible.
I'm wordlessly telling everybody around me not to blow my cover; we're doing a film here, so just be cool, no autograph shit. I slip even deeper into character: I can almost feel my cells shifting, my bone structure morphing, my posture is different from my own, I am a god. All I have to do is stand here with intention and everybody here will notice. Good thing they're kind of scared by my character (Jack the Ripper in America), they're giving me plenty of space to work; I wonder if this barista knows that she's being filmed while I order (vanilla ruebos) tea?
That's the fuckin' trick: hide the goddamn cameras! Go back to people who show up well on film later and get them to sign releases, but for beautiful, totally candid shots, camera position is everything.

"Rick, I want you to go deeper, just let yourself go . . . I 've got you covered . . ."

I begin to vibrate, like some drooping Dali A440 tuning fork, to the psychopath wavelength. Something about being very, very still inside, and grounded like a giant bell gong is suspended from my diaphragm.

Holy shit! This isn't a movie, this is some goddamn Reality TV show! OOOOooooo, ok: Xerxes is using this to get me national exposure! Of fucking course. They're going to title this something like "Who Wants to Marry a Carpenter", and a covey of gorgeous women are going to join me onstage for the grand finale. One of them will be Robin [first girlfriend], there's Mary P. [first true love] and Capucine [hands-down best lover], and several other women I don't recognize. They're going to shoot it over at the Fairgrounds, maybe that's why the lights are on over there now: fuck yea, they're doing a light check.

Shit, how do I get myself into this? I am terrified of being up in front of large crowds, but somehow I keep winding up there.

Xerxes is giving me the scoop: "ok, Rick, when we're ready you'll come onstage and go down center, the women will form an arc around you from upstage [but don't upstage yourself--keep at least half of your face to the audience]. (like I need him to tell me that, jesus christ, Xerxes, how many times have we worked together?)
"You're going to be introduced to ten women; several of them have been very significant in your life; the last one's going to be Britney."
[oh my god, I'm going to have to be so fucking focused out there, and all I can do is tell the truth, even if it makes me look bad . . .]

". . .and you're going to have to choose one. Your One True Soulmate. And *if* you choose right, you're going to win a dream house here in New Orleans, and cars and cash and a bunch of other shit, but you get where I'm going . . ."

Now my butterflies are cockroaches. "Aww, *man* . . . this is fuckin terrifying . . ."

"Don't worry! You'll be great: just be yourself and trust your instincts . . ."

"I need to walk . . ."

"OK, just be back here by 5:30 . . ."

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

With my eyes closed, lying on my back in my room above Fair Grinds, I hear insects: a loud, saturating sound, accompanied by the singing of an old woman sitting across the campfire from me. With us are several others; I don't remember meeting any of them. Where is this place, the Brazilian Amazon?
I can't see well in the dim firelight, but the curandera tells me that's not important. Just breathe, slowly, and with as much love as you can.
As soon as she telepaths this to me I'm in outer space, turning with the stars and planets and moons. I feel as if I'm inside an atom, either infinitely large or small, it makes no difference from here . . .

You are the Singer
of all you know and don't know,
As you imagine, so it is true.

Lie still harried one
and rest.
You have nothing left to do
but sing of our
redemption.

Her song is mixed together with the fire and insects, and her communication is far more filigreed than I can write, but the above is as close as I can get to the gist of it.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Joe is sitting with a really cute girl on the Fair Grinds patio. I walk over and catch his eye half-way there.

"Well, well, look what the cat dragged in . . ."

"Richard . . ." Joe says smiling, "This is my friend Alison . . ."

"Hi, Alison, how's it goin'?"

"Pretty good; been seeing some of the city . . . a blast so far . . ."

How much can I flirt with her . . .hmmm . . .I don't know if this is a *friend* or *more than a friend* of Joe's. I decide not to push it, safest bet it seems.

"Hey, I'm having a pot-luck over at my place about noon this Sunday. Come join us!"

"Sounds great, I'll be there. Very nice to meet you Alison."

and just like that, I retire upstairs.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Just before noon on Sunday I see a clock and remember the pot luck. I dress in my same clothes and cross Esplanade towards St. Philip, remembering that he lives on a corner and that I'll know it when I see it.
I open the front door of his studio and step in. About a dozen pair of shoes are neatly lined near the door, so I sit down and pull off my boots. Still in my overcoat I cross the room towards the kitchen, where all the chatter is coming from.
I nod hello to the guy standing in the door, and before I enter to say hello and meet everybody I feel the urge to kneel and face the small speakers just ahead of me, playing nice music, some kind of psy trance I've never heard. I reach up and adjust them so that the sound moves, feeling almost like it's coming *from* me rather than *to* me. I don't know how long I stayed there, but eventually I got up and moved into the crowded kitchen, with its low ceiling and dim light. It smells wonderful: of eggs and casseroles, bacon and pungent salad dressings. Joe comes over and welcomes me, pointing towards his small bedroom area for me to leave my coat. When I come back he introduces me to the whole table, an even mix of men and women. Some of the women are really cute, I wonder if they can hold a good conversation?
I am so happy to be here: how amazingly cool to have this nice group arranged by Joe because the producers of my show asked him to . . .and of course paid for the flowers and the nice silverware.
I kneel besides a young woman, putting my hand on the top back of her chair, crouching like a baseball catcher. We start chatting, I can't recall what about, but I was distracted by thoughts of the apartment that was being finished across the street. Of course they weren't working on it today, but I could see that they had gutted the inside of the second floor, and were adding posts to support a new balcony. Wow: that is it: that's where I'm going to move into after this show is over! This is so fucking cool . . .
I'm not saying any of this to her, this is just what's flashing through my mind, but I'm still enjoying my proximity to her and am managing a coherent conversation apparently . . .
Then Joe announces that it's time to eat, so everybody grab a plate and help yourself . . .
I'm in no hurry, and hate lines so I wait for a bit, still chatting, stifling the urge to ask this woman to join me on the coat pile for a make-out session.
Eventually I wind up on the opposite side of the table with a plate full of cheese grits, bacon, eggs, biscuits, and some unfamiliar southwestern-ish looking casserole. The first thing I try is the bacon, which I mix with a big fork-full of cheese grits and eggs. As soon as it's in my mouth though, I feel that something is very wrong. I am being watched by someone here. They are very pissed that I am eating dead animals.
So I put down my fork and knife, and look up; and it is *her*, the one I was speaking with earlier, straight across the table. She isn't staring at me, but I can feel her, there's no way she can hide her disgust at what I'm doing. I've dealt with these radical vegetarian types before, and I fucking hate 'em: puritanical, self-righteous pricks who can't see that animals have *always* eaten other animals, at least the carnivores and omnivores, which is most mammals . . .
There was a time when I would have just let this slide, ignored her. But she was broadcasting so strongly that I had to respond, so I picked up my steak knife and held it in front of me, pointing it towards my right eye, inches away, while staring at her: "Go ahead: you hate me for eating dead animals, then slam this knife through my brain so that it stops against the back of my skull; c'mon, I don't give a fuck; I'd rather you kill me than sit there silently broadcasting your goddamn hate . . ."
Saying all of this silently, of course. She gets it, uh huh.

"Whoa, Richard, what's going on? . . ."

The room is suddenly very quiet. Joe repeats himself:

"Richard, what's going on man? What's wrong?"

I don't move. I keep the knife aimed like a laser straight through my right eyeball, daring this bitch to jump up and drive it through my brain.

"Dude, put down the knife, this is not cool . . .c'mon man . . .

Put the knife down, Richard. "

I don't mean to scare everybody, I'm just establishing a boundary, y'know? Nobody's going to pitch their psychic vomit towards me without me taking em on, those fuckin days are done . . .

So I place the knife back on the table, still staring her down so that she knows, without a doubt, that her shit will not float with me . . .

"Richard, you need to go, c'mon man . . .you need to go . . .

Richard, this is so not cool, you need to go!"

This is good: everybody is doing amazing work; I can feel the danger crinkling like wax paper throughout the kitchen. Up until now I haven't said a word, but now I turn to Joe and look into his eyes. Something about his 'anger' doesn't ring quite true to me, so when he looks at me desperately and says that I have to go again I shout:

"C'MON JOE, COMMIT!!!!!!"

"Arrite, that's it, let's go . . .!"

He comes over and motions right beside me; he knows not to actually touch me, but like an usher, moves me out of the kitchen and across the studio. I don't remember getting my boots. That could be where I lost them . . .
But I do remember sitting on the front step with Joe.

"Dude!, something's wrong man . . .what's going on?"

"I don't know . . .I'm just staying as true as I can to this thing . . ."

(". . .very nice, Rick, excellent. Just stay with it ; I'm here for you . . .") says Xerxes in my earpiece.

"You need some help, ok? You've got to get some help . . .is there anybody you can call? . . ."
"No, no . . . it's ok, man."

And I try to give him some acting pointers: like how when you're really angry you want to *ground* it, like I really believe you're going to come at me, y'know?

But he's not into taking direction right now, and that's cool; maybe later when we talk about the scene with Xerxes.

I'm just surprised at how adamant he is; this part he's really committed to: he's not going to let me come back inside.

"Don't worry Joe, it's cool . . " I smile at him and pat his knee.

"It's all good . . . we'll talk later."

And I stand up and walk. I don't know where to . . .if I had to guess I'd say back up to my room.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

In the summer of 1973 I was eleven years old, and at Camp Kickapoo, the state Boy Scout Camp
just north of Jackson, Mississippi. I was a member of J.J.
White Presbyterian Church-sponsered Troop 124, known for
chanting "124! 124! 124! 124!" in unison as we marched to
the evening flag lowering and dinner.

I was small and shy, but popular because I was very skilled at
"Capture the Flag" and obstacle course races. I was also unusually beautiful. For that summer, I was unstoppable.

Being one of the younger scouts, I tried to blend into
the scenery whenever possible, thereby avoiding the
terrorisms perpetrated by the older and larger
scouts. I channeled my insecurities into competition,
stretching myself to higher and higher performance levels.
This garnered me the attention and respect of the older
boys, and I craved their attention and their respect.

One of our assistant scoutmasters was a storyteller/banjo
picker named Ted Ammon. Mr. Ammon was in his mid-sixties
and exercised a daemonic like control over our troop with
his music and his ghost stories and his brillo-like beard
he'd use to scrape across our tender faces. I was in awe of
him: the way he could make 300 scouts around a bonfire sit
bone-still for a whole hour, spinning stories about the
cannibal blind mole men who only came out at night now . . .
(cue for the boys in the very back to get reeeealll
nervous).

Mr. Ammon usually stayed up later than everybody else, and
I was accustomed to waking up in the middle of the night to
the smell of his cigar, or the gentle hiss of his lantern.
I recall now that he also drank Jack Daniels on some of
those evenings, and when he did he could lock an icy,
maniacal stare on you, that, when I was eleven years old,
was bizarrely fearsome.

One night I was awakened by. . .something. . .the scuffing
of a moccasin, a cough, the cicada's roaring. . .I don't
know exactly what it was, but my breathing quickly
shallowed when I realized that Mr. Ammon is standing right
there: just outside my tent. In fact, he just clicked his
flashlight OFF.

And he's standing there.

For what seems like forever.

I use my innate chameleon ability and pretend to be asleep,
even as he steps slowly onto the pine-stud deck which is
the floor of my tent. My best friend, Jim
Morgan, is either asleep or acting as well.

He slips into our tent like a mist, and he's just standing there,
looking.

I can hardly breathe.

After some eternity, he moves towards me. I am on top of
my sleeping bag, wearing only white briefs.

Through the tiniest slits in my eyelids I see him slowly close in on my genitals with his right index finger.

His finger lands, light as a mosquito, on the tip of my penis.

I suddenly cough and roll over, pretending to toss in my sleep, breathing slowly, deeply, the sound of sleep. If I never had radar before that, I've sure had it ever since.

Yet that night faded into the underbrush of my memory, and, twenty years later when I set a torch to that field during my first intensive therapy, I discovered the bones and ashes of my trust.
